Sophomore forward Bri McClain scored both goals Sunday as Cal State Stanislaus defeated Cal State San Bernardino, 2-0, in a California Collegiate Athletic Associaiton women's soccer match at Coyote Premier Field.
The Warriors, by virtue of Sonoma State's forfeiture of four conference wins and seven overall wins, including one involving them, assumed first place in the CCAA's North Division and are now 5-0-1 in the CCAA and 7-3-1 overall.
The Coyotes, held scoreless for the third consecutive match, dropped to 3-5-2 overall and 0-5-1 in the CCAA.
McClain scored her third goal of the season in the 22nd minute when he collected a rebound of her own shot that came off the Coyote goalkeeper's hands and put it inside the far post for what proved to be the match-deciding score. Cherie Early set up the play with a nice crossing pass into the box to earn the assist.
In the 57th minute, McClain scored an insurance goal, taking a hard shot off a pass from Kaity Bojorquez that deflected off a defender into the net.
The Warriors played solid defense but the Coyotes had two solid opportunities to score. Junior forward
Krista Feer's hard blast in the opening minutes of the match was saved by Warriors' keeper Jessica Sitarz. Later in the first half, a chip shot from CSUSB freshman
Ashley Haagsma was tipped over the crossbar by Sitarz.
CSUSB outshot the Warriors 12-8. The Coyotes have scored just nine goals in 10 matches while yielding just 12 to opponents.
