Vanguard University from the coastal city of Costa Mesa fared better in the 109-degree heat than the host Cal State San Bernardino side Saturday, handing the Coyotes a 2-0 shutout loss at Coyote Premier Field in a non-conference men's soccer match.
The Lions, 1-0, got a nifty goal from Sem Lopez in the 36th minute as he toed the ball into the goal while lying prone on the ground with Coyotes goalkeeper Lucas Pepi nearby. Junior Jason Swift deposited the second Lions goal just one minute into the second half off a flick and a centering pass courtesy of Tom Culver and Ryan Marquez.
A potential third goal went awry when Christopher Leiva's first-half penalty kick caromed off the left post and was cleared away by the Coyotes.
Cal State, 1-3, had its chances but Lions goalkeeper Trevor Herrera stopped three shots on goal.
Pepi had six saves in goal for CSUSB. Each team had 12 shots at the net in the match.
