Baseball Sweeps Cal State East Bay on Senior Day

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino baseball team swept a rain-soaked CCAA doubleheader with Cal State East Bay Saturday afternoon at Fiscalini Field.

CSUSB won 14-6 in game one, before rallying from a seven-run deficit to win game two 12-7 to claim the series win.

With the sweep, the Coyotes improve to 22-22 overall on the season and 14-13 in CCAA play.

Between games, the 15 Cal State San Bernardino seniors were honored as they played in their final regular season home game at Fiscalini Field. Benji Solano (Chula Vista, Calif.), Greg Luna (Moreno Valley, Calif.), Carter Herrera (Yucaipa, Calif.), Patrick Fregoso (Eastvale, Calif.), Conner Batzer (Ridgecrest, Calif.), Jeremy Giesegh (Upland, Calif.), Ethan Bautista (Azusa, Calif.) Brian Garcia (Lake Arrowhead, Calif.), Dom Dominguez (Victorville, Calif.), Josh VerKuilen (Glendora, Calif.), Jesse Alfaro (Moreno Valley, Calif.), Harrison Cordeiro (Chicago, Ill.), Quinn Stewart (Fontana, Calif.), Devyn Hernandez (Pasco, Wash.), and Garret Barto (Pittsburgh, Pa.) were joined on the field by their friends and family for the ceremony.

Game 1 - CSUSB 14, Cal State East Bay 6

Cal State East Bay got on the board first with an unearned run in the top of the first, but CSUSB answered right back with five runs in the bottom of the frame. Barto drove in CSUSB's first run of the game with an RBI fielder's choice, followed by a Tyson Pettingill (Overton, Nev.) bases loaded walk. Fregoso delivered the big swing of the inning, clearing the bases with a three run double over the head of the center fielder.

An RBI single in the top of third cut the Coyote lead to 5-2, but Giesegh delivered a two-run single in the bottom of the fifth to stretch the advantage to 7-2.

East Bay made things interesting by scoring once in the sixth and twice in the seventh, but CSUSB pulled away with two in the seventh and five in the eighth to secure the win. Giesegh had an RBI single in the seventh, while Barto, Pettingill, and Solano all delivered RBIs in the eighth.

In the leadoff spot, junior Eddie Alfaro (Moreno Valley, Calif.) led the Yotes offensively with a 3-for-6 outing at the dish. Barto, Pettingill, Giesegh, and Fregoso all had a pair of hits.

The win was credited to Coyote junior Ivan Rodriguez (San Bernardino, Calif.), who went seven innings, allowing four earned runs.

Game 2 - CSUSB 12, Cal State East Bay 7

Cal State East Bay scored the first seven runs of the game in the first five innings, and were no-hitting the Yotes when an hour and six minute rain delay paused the contest.

After the stoppage, CSUSB exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the fifth to level the score. A Solano RBI single opened the Coyote scoring, before the second run came in on an East Bay fielding error. Alejandro McKay (San Diego, Calif.) delivered an RBI double down the left field line, before Noah Betanco (San Diego, Calif.) notched an RBI infield single. The final three runs of the inning came on what would have been an inning-ending error and a wild pitch.

In the bottom of the sixth, CSUSB took the lead for good when Pettingill turned around a 1-2 pitch and put it over the left field wall to give his team a 10-7 lead.

RBI fielder's choices from McKay and Pettingill in the bottom of the eighth gave the Yotes some insurance, and eventually gave the game its final of 12-7.

Solano paced CSUSB offensively with a 3-for-4 outing, scoring two runs and driving home one. Nadeau also had two hits in the win and a key outfield assist to help the Yotes secure the come from behind win.

Herrera took over after the rain delay and threw 4.2 shutout innings to improve to 3-1 on the season. He allowed only two hits while striking out one.

Next up for the Yotes, they will start a series at Cal State Dominguez Hills on Thursday. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
