SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino baseball team dropped its series opener 14-3 to Westmont College in a non-conference contest Friday afternoon at Russell Carr Field.
With the defeat, the Coyotes move to 1-4 overall on the season.
The Coyotes broke the ice in the top of the first inning when
Jeremy Giesegh (Upland, Calif.) crossed home plate on a base hit from redshirt junior
Eddie Alfaro (Moreno Valley, Calif.), giving CSUSB a 1-0 lead.
Westmont rebounded with two runs in the bottom of the first and two runs in the bottom of the third to take a 4-1 lead, before Alfaro struck again in the top of the fourth. The junior belted a two-run homer down the left field line to cut the deficit to 4-3, his first home run in a Coyote uniform.
Westmont would answer in a big way in the bottom of the frame, plating eight runs to take a commanding 12-3 lead. They would also score single runs in the fifth and seventh to give the game its final score of 14-3.
CSUSBÂ mustered only four hits in the defeat, two of which off the bat of Alfaro. Giesegh and senior
Dom Dominguez (Victorville, Calif.) recorded the only other two hits for the Coyotes.
The loss was credited to CSUSB ace
Devyn Hernandez (Pasco, Wash.), who struck out three over 3.1 innings pitched.
The Yotes and Warriors will close out their three game series with a doubleheader on Saturday. First pitch in game one of the twinbill is slated for 11 a.m.
