Men's Basketball Downs San Francisco State in Double Overtime

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino men's basketball team outlasted San Francisco State in a thrilling double-overtime contest, pulling away late for a 99–90 victory Thursday night at Coussoulis Arena.

With the win, the Coyotes improve to 10–10 overall and 7–6 in CCAA play.

San Francisco State opened the game with an early surge, going ahead 17-2 but CSUSB stayed within striking distance behind steady production from freshman Xavier Clinton (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) and redshirt senior Gavin Davis (Carson, Calif.). Clinton scored eight first-half points, including a pair of baskets in the paint, while Davis knocked down a three-pointer and added key free throws late. Despite the Coyotes forcing turnovers and creating second-chance opportunities, CSUSB trailed 37–34 at the break.

The Coyotes found their rhythm offensively in the second half. Clinton continued to attack, finishing with 15 points in the half, while sophomore Aidan Fowler (San Clemente, Calif.) hit timely three-pointers to keep CSUSB within one possession. Davis scored eight points after halftime, including a go-ahead three late, as the Coyotes erased multiple deficits and forced overtime tied at 78–78.

Both teams traded baskets in the first overtime. Redshirt junior Malachi Murrell (La Quinta, Calif.) came up with a crucial steal and fast-break layup, and Davis calmly knocked down free throws in the final minute to send the game to a second extra period tied at 84–84.

CSUSB took control in the second overtime, outscoring the Gators 15–6. Fowler scored nine points in the period, converting multiple finishes in the paint and free throws down the stretch. Davis sealed the win at the line, while redshirt senior Amound Anderson II (Gardena, Calif.) added late free throws to put the game out of reach.

Davis finished with 23 points, shooting 10-for-11 from the free-throw line. Clinton added 23 points on 10-of-18 shooting, while Fowler finished with 15 points and six assists. CSUSB dominated the glass with a 49–31 rebounding advantage and scored 26 second-chance points in the victory.

The Coyotes will continue CCAA play in their next outing, facing a touch test in Cal State East Bay at home on Saturday. Tip-off is slated for 3 p.m.
