Men's Basketball Upends Cal State Monterey Bay

SEASIDE, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino men's basketball team defeated Cal State Monterey Bay 87-66 Thursday evening at the Kelp Bed.

With the victory, the Coyotes improved to 20-10 overall and 13-8 in CCAA play.

After Monterey Bay opened the game with a layup, the Coyotes responded with a three-pointer from senior Andrew Henderson (Chatsworth, Calif.). On the next possession, graduate student Evan Oliver (San Bernardino, Calif.) stole the ball and converted a fast-break layup, giving CSUSB a 5-2 lead.

The Otters went on a run, building a six-point lead, but the Coyotes quickly bounced back. After retaking the lead with a steal by senior Jordan Jones (Macon, Ga.) and a layup from Oliver, CSUSB never trailed again. Andrew Henderson and Oliver led the Coyotes in the first half, scoring 17 and 15 points, respectively.

Monterey Bay opened the second half with a basket, but Jones and senior Nic Welp (Seattle, Wash.) responded with the first two baskets for the Coyotes in the period. Later, Andrew Henderson and Welp each threw down dunks on consecutive possessions, further energizing the CSUSB offense.

However, it was the Coyotes' three-point shooting that was particularly impressive. CSUSB made a season-high 14 three-pointers on just 23 attempts (60.9 percent). Six different players - Andrew Henderson, Charlie Henderson (Ladera Ranch, Calif.), Oliver, Jones, Camren Pierce (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.), and Josh Adoh (Bellflower, Calif.) - each contributed at least one three-pointer, showcasing the team's depth and perimeter shooting prowess. Their shooting proved too much for Monterey Bay, who was not able to hit the three ball like the Yotes.

Up next, CSUSB faces off against Stanislaus State on Saturday in the regular season finale. Tip-off in Turlock is slated for 3 p.m.
