SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino women's basketball team fell 60-45 to the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds on Friday evening at the Don Nasser Family Plaza.
With the defeat, the Coyotes fall to 2-1 on the season.
CSUSB took an early 5-2 lead, with all five points coming from sophomore Princess Cassell (Eastvale, Calif.). Despite the good start, Fresno Pacific rallied to take a 16-9 lead at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter proved to be the best for CSUSB, and they started on a 10-4 run. Junior Kendal Alloway (San Diego, Calif.) started things off with a layup which came after blocking a Fresno Pacific shot on the other end. Cassell would score on the next possession, and ended up with 13 points in the first half.
The Coyotes would slowly climb back, and a jumper by senior Rebecca Saidoff (West Hills, Calif.) in the closing seconds of the quarter made it 25-25 at halftime.
After the Sunbirds hit a pair of buckets in the third to go up by four, CSUSB answered immediately. Alloway knocked down two layups, and Saidoff drilled a three-pointer to give the Coyotes their first lead since the opening quarter, 32–31.
CSUSB then pushed the margin to its largest of the night at five points, 38–33, following a layup from junior Citlali Salazar (Los Angeles, Calif.). Fresno Pacific would tighten up defensively, holding the Coyotes to just one basket over the final three and a half minutes and trimming the deficit to one, 40–39, heading into the fourth quarter.
The Sunbirds outscored the Yotes 21-5 in the fourth quarter, aided by a 12-for-13 mark from the charity stripe to pull out a 60-45 victory.
Cassell led the Coyotes with 13 points, while Alloway finished the evening with her first NCAA double-double, posting 12 points and a team-high 10 boards.
Up next, the Coyotes face off against Dominican University on Saturday evening in San Francisco. Tip-off is slated for 5 p.m.
