LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The #20 California State University San Bernardino men's basketball team has punched its ticket to the NCAA Division II West Regional Championship after defeating conference rival Chico State 75-73 in the Round of 32 on Saturday evening at University Gym.
With the win, the Coyotes improve to 25-7 overall on the season and advance to face either Azusa Pacific or Central Washington on Monday night at 7 p.m.
San Bernardino came out of the gate on fire, opening on a 7-0 run in the first 1:50. The Yotes would lead nearly the entire first half, leading by as many as nine, but Chico would tie the score at 30-30 with 53 seconds left in the half.
A pair of Evan Guillory (Springfield, Mo.) free throws in the final minute gave CSUSB a 32-30 lead heading to the break.
Two Yotes reached double figures in the opening half, as Robby Robinson (San Diego, Calif.) posted 11 points and five rebounds, while Guillory had 10 points, four boards, and two assists.
Neither team could take control of the second half, as the teams battled back and forth in the opening stages of the period. Chico State took a five-point lead at 42-37 six minutes into the period, but CSUSB quickly responded with a 6-0 run to reclaim the lead.
The Coyotes would run their lead all the way to seven points at 74-67 with 1:44 to go after a pair of Chris Mitchell (Oceanside, Calif.) free throws.
The CSUSB offense went cold in the final two minutes of the game, as the Wildcats pulled to within two at 75-73 with under a minute to go. Chico State had a chance to win the game on a last second three-pointer, but the contested shot did not fall and the Yotes held on for the narrow victory.
For the Yotes, Mitchell had a huge 26-point, 12-rebound double-double to lead CSUSB offensively. Robinson chipped in 23 points of his own, and shot 8-of-14 from the floor in the victory. Guillory was the only other Coyote in double figures, posting 15. Senior LeAndrew Knight (Lompoc, Calif.) contributed with 11 rebounds, including seven on the offensive end of the floor.
