Box Score 2 SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The #4 California State University San Bernardino baseball team earned a pair of wins over Colorado Christian University on Saturday to sweep their non-conference weekend series at Fiscalini Field.
CSUSB won game one 4-1, before securing the sweep with a 21-5 victory in game two.
With the victories, the Coyotes improve to 3-0 on the young season.
Game 1 - CSUSB 4, CCU 1
After five scoreless innings, Cal State San Bernardino scored in each of the final three innings to rally for a 4-1 win.
Senior Benny Olguin (Alhambra, Calif.) sparkled in his first start of the season for the Yotes, throwing five no-hit innings with seven strikeouts, but unfortunately the Coyote bats could not muster any offense until after he exited.
The Cougars took the 1-0 lead in the top of the sixth, but the advantage was short-lived. In the bottom of the frame, sophomore Patrick Fregoso (Eastvale, Calif.) knotted the score with an RBI triple, but when the throw to third was wild, Fregoso scampered home to put the Yotes ahead 2-1.
In the bottom of the seventh, San Bernardino extended its lead with an RBI single from junior Matt Gonzales (Glendora, Calif.), and added some insurance with an RBI double from Daniel Garcia Jr. (San Bernardino, Calif.) in the eighth.
Senior John Pfeffer (RIverside, Calif.) slammed the door shut with a perfect top of the ninth to earn his first save of the season.
Sophomore Carter Herrera (Yucaipa, Calif.) earned the win on the hill for the Yotes, allowing one run (unearned) in three innings of relief.
Game 2 - CSUSB 21, CCU 5
The Coyote offense exploded in the final game of the three-game set, posting 21 runs to glide past Colorado Christian.
The Yotes scored three runs in the bottom of the first and five runs in both the second and third innings to jump in front 13-0 right from the outset. They would go on to score in six of their eight plate appearances on their way to the victory.
Graduate student Giovanni Del Negro (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) went 5-for-5 in the win with two doubles, four runs scored, and a run batted in. It is just the 15th time in program history that a Coyote has notched five hits in a game, and the first time since 2014.
Del Negro was not the player to etch his name in the record book in the contest. Junior Tyler Vanneste (Warman, Saskatchewan), who went 2-for-5, tied the program record with seven RBIs. Only four other players have ever notched seven runs batted in in a single game, including Garcia last season.
Juniors Jacob Mejia (Palm Desert, Calif.) and Roberto Bueno (Wilmington, Calif.) each recorded three hits for the Yotes in the victory as well.
Andrick Jones (Gilbert, Ariz.) was credited with the win on the hill for the Coyotes, throwing one shutout inning of relief.
Next up for the Yotes, they will open a four-game home series against Central Washington on Thursday afternoon. First pitch from Fiscalini Field is slated for 2 p.m.
