ROHNERT PARK, Calif. - Senior Sedrick Altman (Rialto, Calif.) drained a three-pointer as time expired Thursday evening as the California State University San Bernardino men's basketball team stunned Sonoma State University 71-68 in CCAA play at the Wolves' Den.
With the victory, the Coyotes jump to 15-5 overall on the season and 10-4 in the CCAA
Altman's buzzer-beater capped a wild sequence that started with the Seawolves tying the game at 68-68 with a triple at the other end with 5.9 seconds to play. Altman immediately took the inbound pass up the floor, ran into a double team just before the three-point line, and nailed a contested 25-footer as the horn sounded, silencing the Sonoma State crowd and giving the visitors the victory.
The Yotes struggled offensively in the opening half, knocking down just 9-of-39 (23.1 percent) of their field goals, but only trailing by five at 33-28 going to the locker room. San Bernardino was paced by senior forward Robby Robinson (San Diego, Calif.) with nine first half points, while Chris Mitchell (Oceanside, Calif.) snagged 10 boards.
The Seawolves came out of the break hot, opening up their largest lead of the contest at 42-30 3:07 into the second half. San Bernardino answered however with a 25-11 run, capped by a clutch Jalen Flanagan (Oceanside, Calif.) three, giving the Yotes a 55-53 lead, their first advantage since the score was 5-3.
The teams went basket for basket over the final seven minutes of the game, leading to the wild sequence that ended in Altman's buzzer beater.
Four Coyotes finished the evening in double figures, paced by Mitchell and Robinson with 16 points each to lead all players. Altman notched 14 points, while senior LeAndrew Knight (Lompoc, Calif.) poured in 11 of his own. Mitchell recorded the game's only double-double, adding a game-high 14 boards.
CSUSB will return to action on Saturday, facing off with first-place Cal State San Marcos on the road on Saturday. Tip-off is slated for 1 p.m.
