POMONA, Calif. – The #8 California State University San Bernardino men's basketball team defeated the #21 Cal Poly Pomona Broncos 65-62 Saturday afternoon at Kellogg Arena.
With the win, the Coyotes improve to 10-3 overall and 3-1 in CCAA play.
CSUSB scored the game's first four points, but Cal Poly Pomona responded with an 11-0 run, shutting out the Coyotes for nearly five minutes. However, CSUSB closed the half with a 29-13 run, taking a 33-24 lead. Graduate student Evan Oliver (San Bernardino, Calif.) led the Coyotes in the first half, including a three-pointer at the buzzer. The CSUSB defense was stingy in the first half, as they forced 14 turnovers.
The second half started slow for the Coyotes, but it soon became a back-and-forth battle. With 2:30 remaining, Cal Poly Pomona led 61-56, but CSUSB fought back. A three-pointer by senior Camren Pierce (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) cut the Broncos' lead to two.
After free throws by both teams made the score 62-61 in favor of Cal Poly Pomona, senior Andrew Henderson (Chatsworth, Calif.) put CSUSB back on top for good on a layup with 52 seconds remaining. He would finish with a game-high 23 points as well as nine rebounds.
Although Cal Poly Pomona had a few chances down the stretch, CSUSB's defense made several key stops in the final minute. Pierce sealed the game with two free throws, as a three-pointer by Cal Poly Pomona at the end was no good.
Free throws were the key difference, as CSUSB shot 22-of-24 (91.7 percent), while Cal Poly Pomona shot 14-of-25 (56 percent).
CSUSB will be off until 2025, when they face Cal State Los Angeles at Coussoulis Arena on Thursday, January 2. Tip-off is at 7:30 p.m.
