Men's Basketball Downs #25 Cal State LA in Thriller

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino men's basketball team won a thriller over #25 California State University Los Angeles by a final score of 73-70 Thursday evening in CCAA action inside Coussoulis Arena.

With the victory, the Coyotes improve to 14-4 overall on the season and 9-3 in the CCAA.

The Golden Eagles went to the break with a 39-37 lead after a tightly-contested opening 20 minutes. The half featured three ties and seven lead changes, and an early 16-10 LA advantage was the largest lead of the half.

Leading all scorers before the break was San Bernardino junior guard Chris Mitchell (Oceanside, Calif.), who posted 11 points and six boards. Senior Sedrick Altman (Rialto, Calif.) was the only other player who finished the first half in double figures, registering 10 points.

LA took their largest lead of the contest at 47-39 just over two minutes into the second half, but the Yotes responded with a 9-0 run over the next three minutes to take the lead at 48-47. San Bernardino took the lead for good on a LeAndrew Knight (Lompoc, Calif.) layup just past the midway point of the half.

Cal State LA had two opportunities to take the lead when trailing 71-70 with under 10 seconds to play, but a missed three and a clutch LeAndrew Knight (Lompoc, Calif.) block kept San Bernardino ahead for good. A pair of Altman free throws with 0.4 seconds left sealed the victory for the Coyotes.

Four Yotes finished the game in double figures, led by Mitchell, who poured in 24 points to go along with nine boards and four assists in his first game since being named CCAA Player of the Week on Tuesday. Altman notched 18 points while knocking down four triples, while Knight and senior Robby Robinson (San Diego, Calif.) each scored 13.

With 15 and 11 boards respectively, Robinson and Knight each earned double-doubles in the victory.

Next up for the Yotes, they will host Cal State Dominguez Hills at Coussoulis Arena on Saturday afternoon. Tip-off is slated for 3 p.m.
