SEASIDE, Calif. – The CSUSB baseball team defeated Cal State Monterey Bay in a thrilling Game 1 of the Super Regionals on Friday, winning by a score of 8-6. They are now just one win away from advancing to their first DII College World Series.
Â
The Yotes and Otters are now 4-4 against one another this season, proving this Super Regional to be one of the most well-balanced in recent memory. Neither team has ever made it to the DII World Series, so whoever holds up the West Region trophy tomorrow will be making their first trip in program history.
Â
Austyn Coleman started the game for the Yotes, delivering five strong innings getting out of multiple jams with zero runs allowed. With the Yotes leading 8-1 in the sixth, Coleman got bit by an RBI single, wild pitch and the long ball, making the game 8-5.
John Pfeffer entered with two outs, and threw just one pitch to get out of the inning with the lead still intact.
Â
Benny Olguin gave a gutsy performance out of the pen, throwing 76 pitches in 3.0 innings to pick up his second three-inning save of the season. Olguin struck out six batters, five of which came in his first two scoreless innings. In the ninth, with the tying run on second and the winning run at the plate, the junior got the batter to pop up to third base for the final out of the game. This thrilling finish gave the Yotes their 42nd victory of the season.
Â
Second baseman
DeShawn Johnson continued to swing the bat well, collecting three hits with a big home run in the fourth inning. Johnson also scored two runs in the game, inching him closer to the all-time CSUSB runs scored record. If he touches home plate one more time, Johnson will tie Chris McAllen at 127 for most runs scored in program history.
Â
The Yotes offense as a whole collected nine hits en route to the win, with
Takuto Kataoka being the other one with multiple hits in the game. Catcher
Garrett Macias also hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning, adding what would prove to be crucial insurance runs.
