No. 4 Yotes Become Fastest Team in Program History to 20 Wins

POMONA, Calif. – The CSUSB baseball team split their doubleheader on Sunday and dropped the series finale on Monday, falling to 20-7 on the season. With their 20th win in the first game of the doubleheader, the Yotes became the quickest team in program history to reach that mark. They now rank second in the CCAA standings with an 11-6 record, behind Cal State Monterey Bay who owns a 16-4 record.

Offense was scarce for both teams in the series, as every single game came within two runs. Despite dropping the series, the Yotes were only outscored 8-7 in the four games – the lowest run total they've scored in a series while also being the lowest amount of runs they've allowed in a series.

Game 2: CSUSB 2, CPP 0
Benny Olguin was lights out from the pen, throwing six scoreless innings while only allowing three baserunners. Josh Sandoval did not allow a hit as the starter, and Oscar Rauda picked up his fifth save of the season. Together, the staff only allowed three hits, their second-lowest of the season.

The CSUSB offense manufactured two runs in the game, with Jason Shedlock crossing the plate both times. In the second inning, a walk and a double allowed Matt Gonzales to collect an RBI single to put the Yotes on the board. Then in the seventh inning, DeShawn Johnson singled to right field to score what would prove to be the final run of the game.

With the win, the Yotes surpass the 20-win mark for the 26th time in program history. Only three CSUSB teams have ever surpassed the 30-win mark, the most being 34 wins in the 2002 season. If the 2022-23 squad continues their dominance in the second half of the season, they are well on their way to becoming the winningest team in program history.

Game 3: CSUSB 1, CPP 2 (9 innings)
In what was scheduled as a seven-inning game, the Yotes and Broncos went into extras to play a full 18 innings on Sunday. After CPP got out to a quick lead in the first, the Yotes responded in the third inning on an RBI single from Garrett Macias. This would be the last of the offensive production for both teams until the bottom of the ninth, when CPP walked off yet again with an RBI single.

Dylan O'Connor delivered a quality start on the mound, only allowing two earned runs and four hits in 8.1 innings. He also recorded seven strikeouts, improving his team-leading total to 46 this year. With the loss, O'Connor falls to 4-2 on the season.

Game 4: CSUSB 2, CPP 3
In the series finale on Monday, the CPP pitching staff continued to neutralize the potent CSUSB lineup. Though they recorded six hits, they were only able to cash in two runs on a Danny Garcia 2-RBI single in the fourth inning. The Broncos broke the tie in the seventh inning on an RBI double to right center field, giving them a 3-2 lead. Despite some late attempts to score, the CSUSB lineup came up unsuccessful giving Cal Poly Pomona the series win.

Austyn Coleman started the game for the Yotes, throwing 4.1 innings while allowing eight hits and striking out four. Conner Batzer took the loss, having allowed the go-ahead run to score in the seventh. Batzer and Andrick Jones teamed up to allow just three hits in 3.2 innings out of the pen while not allowing a single free pass. With the loss, the Yotes drop their first series of the season and fall to 20-7 on the year - still owning the best overall win percentage in the CCAA at .741.
