Del Negro Hits Walk-Off Home Run in Series Finale

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – The CSUSB baseball team split their doubleheader on Saturday, and followed that up with a walk-off win in the series finale on Sunday. With the series split against the Gators, the Yotes now own a 19-4 record on the season and sit in first place in the CCAA with a 10-3 conference record.

Game 2: CSUSB 12, SFSU 7
A massive nine-run fifth inning propelled the Yotes to the win in the first game of the doubleheader. CSUSB entered the inning down 4-3, but after collecting seven hits, two doubles, and two home runs, the Yotes came out on the other side with an 11-4 lead. The top of the Yotes' order supplied a lot of power, with five of the first six batters collecting multiple hits. Giovanni Del Negro and Garrett Macias both homered in the big inning, while DeShawn Johnson and Matt Gonzales both doubled. CSUSB in total scored 12 runs on 16 hits.

On the mound, Luke Hempel kept the Yotes in the game allowing four earned runs in 5.1 innings. John Pfeffer was lights out from the pen, allowing no runs and only four hits in 3.2 innings to pick up his first save of the season.

Game 3: CSUSB 2, SFSU 10 (7 innings)
The Yotes only collected six hits in the second game of the doubleheader, their second-lowest hit total in a game this season. If anything, six hits being one of the lowest totals shows just how potent this lineup has been at the plate this season. Of the six hits, three came off the bat of Derek Bogh, who hit his first home run of the season in the sixth inning as well as two singles. Danny Garcia also homered in the fourth inning, his fifth of the season.

The pitching struggles against the strong Gator offense continued for the Yotes. CCAA Pitcher of the Week Dylan O'Connor allowed six earned runs in 3.1 innings, giving him his first loss of the season. Despite only one strikeout in the game, O'Connor still leads CSUSB with 39 on the season.

Game 4: CSUSB 10, SFSU 8 (10 innings)
CSUSB pulled off a thrilling comeback in the series finale, earning their 19th win of the season. The Yotes led for nearly the entire game until the eighth inning, when San Francisco State tied, and took the lead, on back-to-back errors. Down 8-7 entering the ninth inning, Garrett Macias launched his sixth home run of the season on the first pitch of the inning, tying the game at 8-8. Oscar Rauda shut down the Gator bats in the top of the tenth, setting the stage for a walk-off in the bottom of the inning. With the winning run on second and two outs in the inning, CCAA Player of the Week Giovanni Del Negro smoked a ball over the fence in left field for a walk-off home run. It was his third home run of the series and eighth of the season.

Austyn Coleman delivered a quality start on the mound, allowing zero earned runs in 5.0 innings with three strikeouts. Oscar Rauda was untouchable out of the pen, not allowing a single hit while striking out three to pick up his first win of the season.

Up Next
The Yotes will head on the road next week for a four-game set against Cal Poly Pomona. The Broncos are the only other school in the CCAA to be ranked in the Top 25 this season, so it will be a good road challenge. However, CPP was just swept at Chico State last weekend, so the No. 4 Yotes may be catching them at a good time. You can catch the action on the CCAA Network at ccaanetwork.com.
