SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The CSUSB men's basketball team defeated Montana State Billings in the quarterfinal of the NCAA West Regional on Saturday afternoon, improving to 28-3 on the season and extending their win streak to 13 games. With the win, the Yotes tie the program record for most wins in a season at 28 – a record that was previously held by the 2001-02 squad that finished in the Elite Eight.
Â
The first half featured two large scoring runs from both the Yotes and the Yellow Jackets. Up by only three points at the 10-minute mark, CSUSB went on a 13-1 run highlighted by three treys from
Kaijae Yee-Stephens. However, MSUB returned the favor – immediately going on a 16-3 run to close out the first half and bring the score to a close 33-31.
Â
Though the Yotes went on to maintain the lead for the entire second half, it wasn't by much. In fact, CSUSB only led by double-digits for 27 seconds in the second half - the remaining 19:33 was played with a single-digit lead. One of the key separators came from points off turnovers, in which CSUSB outscored MSUB 11-2 in the second to maintain their separation.
Â
Darius Mickens led the team in both scoring and rebounding to pick up his ninth double-double of the season, finishing with 14 and 10 respectively. Yee-Stephens finished second in scoring with 12, and
Eddie Davis and
Dontrell Shuler both finished with at least 10. Their 63 points scored in the game is the lowest of the entire season, yet turned out to be just enough for the win. Â Â
