POMONA, Calif. – On the night that LeBron James broke the all-time NBA scoring record, the No. 14 Yotes came away with an important win over Cal Poly Pomona to improve to 18-3 on the season. Even though CSUSB scored over 100 points in their previous matchup on New Year's Day, the Broncos were still one of three teams in the CCAA above .500 entering Tuesday. The Yotes took care of them once again, improving their lead in the conference to 1.5 games over second-place Cal State San Marcos.
Â
In just his second start of the season,
Kaijae Yee-Stephens was perfect in the first half - shooting 6-for-6 beyond the arc for 24 points. The Santa Cruz native would go on to hit another trey in the second half, finishing the game with 29 points while shooting 77 percent from both the floor and three-point range. Yee-Stephens is now 22-for-28 (.785) in his last three games, including an incredible 14-for-18 (.777) from three.
Â
"Kaijae is playing with so much confidence right now, it's scary. I am so proud of him. His journey through basketball has had some of ups and downs, so it's great to see him performing so well as he closes out his senior season." – Head Coach Andy Newman
Â
Brandon Knapper,
Darius Mickens,
Eddie Davis, and
Mahmoud Fofana all scored double digits in the win, with Davis and Mickens each collecting double-doubles with 10 boards a piece. Davis has now earned a double-double in three consecutive games, totaling his fifth on the season. Mickens, on the other hand, earned his sixth of the season against the Broncos.
Â
The team as a whole shot very well with a field goal percentage of .585 – their third-highest of the season. They also shot a season-high .550 from three, nearly all coming from Yee-Stephens and Knapper. On par with their dominance this season, the Yotes also had a rebound margin of +15 on Tuesday night. They continue to have the best rebounding in all of Division II, sitting at +15.8 on the season while averaging 46.55 per game.
