SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – The CSUSB baseball team showed up ready to play on Sunday, scoring an impressive 19 runs on 25 hits to complete the three-game series sweep over Central Washington. Their 25 hits against the Wildcats is the most since March 1, 2014, when they collected 26 hits at San Francisco State in an 11-12 loss.
The Yotes stuck to their recipe of success on Sunday afternoon, including strong starting pitching while swinging the bats extremely well. Nine different players collected multiple hits in the game, while 12 players recorded at least one.
Deshawn Johnson went 4-for-5 at the plate, improving his team-leading batting average to .700 through the first series of the season.
After going 0-for-4 yesterday afternoon,
Danny Garcia found his groove in the box going 3-for-5 with two home runs – both to right center field - en route to driving in 5 RBI. Senior infielder
Riley Parker also went deep to left field in the game, his first of the season.
Daryl Ruiz collected two hits and three RBI in every single game against the Wildcats. In total, Ruiz batted .500 (6-for-12) with two home runs, nine RBI, five runs scored, zero strikeouts, and of course, the walk-off home run in game two.
Austyn Coleman delivered a strong start on his birthday, allowing two earned runs with five strikeouts in 5.0 innings to pick up his first win of the season. Coleman was relieved by
Benny Olguin, who put on quite the debut in his first outing as a Yote. In 2.0 innings pitched, all six outs that were recorded came via the strikeout – leaving him with a 27.00 strikeouts per nine innings ratio.
The CSUSB pitching staff held CWU to six runs and eight hits, allowing them to cruise to an easy 19-6 win and the series sweep.
