SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – The CSUSB baseball team made a statement to the CCAA and the rest of the west region on Saturday that they are a serious threat, putting up 20 runs on the No. 4 ranked, and national runner-up, Sea Lions to earn the series win. The Yotes now own an impressive 9-1 record at the conclusion of non-conference play, including a perfect 8-0 record at home.
Â
The CSUSB bats were red-hot to start the game, scoring an incredible 10 runs on 10 hits in the bottom of the first inning. In fact, the Yotes batted through the entire lineup without recording a single out, taking a quick 8-0 lead - highlighted by 3-run home runs from both
Jake Borst and
Patrick Fregoso.
Â
In the bottom of the third inning,
Garrett Macias launched his second grand slam of the season to put the Yotes ahead 14-0 on the number one team in the west region. PLNU responded the next half with a pair of home runs, but were unable to gain any momentum to make a dent in CSUSB's enormous lead.
Â
In the bottom of the fifth, a series of miscues by the Sea Lion defense allowed the Yotes to plate five runs on just one hit, increasing the score 20-3. In total, five Yotes collected multiple hits in the game, including
Deshawn Johnson,
Daryl Ruiz,
Giovanni Del Negro, Macias, and Fregoso. For the second time this season, Johnson also scored four runs in the game. He currently leads the CCAA in runs scored with 19 on the season.
Â
Senior
Austyn Coleman delivered another strong start on the mound, picking up the win to improve to a perfect 3-0 to start the season. Coleman neutralized the strong PLNU offense by forcing 11 groundouts, preventing the Sea Lions from stringing together multiple hits.
John Pfeffer,
Dylan Silver,
Andrick Jones, and
Oscar Rauda each threw an inning out of the pen, combining to allow just four hits and one earned run.
Â
"It was a great series win for us. Our guys came to play against a very good Point Loma team. Our offense swung it well today and our pitching staff gave us every chance to win games. We need to stick with the process as we look ahead to conference play. Keep building off this strong preseason. Now on to season two." – Head Coach Mike Nadeau
