On balance the 2023 year was a good one for the Cal State San Bernardino athletic teams. Eight of the 10 teams sponsored by CSUSB made it to the post-season in 2023.
- Two teams – baseball and men's basketball – both made the NCAA national championship tournament Final Four, losing in the semifinals of both. It was the most impressive performance since women's volleyball and men's golf were runners-up in the NCAA Division II championships of their respective sports in the 2008-09 academic year.
- The women's track and field team sent four athletes to the NCAA Div. II national championship meet.  Sariyah Copeland and Alexis White qualified in the 200 meters and the 4X100 meter team of Copeland, White, Mahlaya Salter and Hailey Hunt competed. Copeland earned second-team all-America honors with a 12th place finish in the 200.
- The softball team had a 31-win season and advanced to the NCAA West Regional.
- The golf team finished third in the CCAA tournament and 13th at the NCAA West-Central Super Regional.
- Men's soccer advanced to the CCAA conference tournament.
- Women's cross-country wound up 20th at the NCAA West Regional championship after an eighth-place finish in the CCAA meet 6-mile run.
- The women's basketball team posted a 14-14 record, just missing an opportunity to nail down the program's first winning record in seven years.
- The perennial powerhouse women's volleyball program tied for first place in the regular season CCAA standings, won the CCAA conference tournament but lost in the NCAA West Regional title match to Cal State L.A. Four Yotes earned all-America honors – Jenna Patton (1st team); freshman Trinity Sheridan (2nd team); Marlee Nunley and Shira Lahav (honorable mention).
- Women's soccer had a nice 8-6-4 season record, 5-3-3 in the CCAA, but must missed out on a chance to play in the CCAA tournament.
BASEBALL
Â
It all came together in 2023 for Mike Nadeau's baseball team, posting a 46-19 record and just the third NCAA West Regional championship – the first as a Division II member – in the history of the program dating back to 1987. CSUSB made the Division III national tournament in 1990 and 1991 after winning the regional both years.
Â
All that came after the Yotes made their ninth CCAA tournament appearance and were ranked high enough to earn a spot in the West Regional where they defeated CCAA champion Cal State Monterey Bay in the title game.
The 2023 squad set all-time team season records for games played (65), wins (46), runs scored, runs per game, batting average, hits, at bats, home runs, runs batted in, total bases and sacrifice flies.
Â
The pitching staff set new records for saves (17), strikeouts (456), innings pitched (553) and appearances. Defensively, the team set new records for chances, putouts, and fielding percentage (. 976).
Â
The only meaningful accomplishment that eluded this powerhouse team was taking home a CCAA pennant. The program has only one conference title to brag about. The 2002 team took home the CCAA tournament championship.
Â
Three of this year's stars earned all-America honors – DeShawn Johnson and Giovanni Del Negro team were tabbed for the third team while closer Oscar Rauda was named to the first-team after setting a team record with 17 saves.
Â
Coach Nadeau was voted the NCAA Div. West Region Coach of the Year.
Â

Coach Newman led his team to a 55-8 record over the past two seasons, 36-4 in the CCAA, and accepted a position as head coach at Cal State Northridge, where he and the Matadors already made headlines by defeating UCLA on their home court this month.Â
Newman's replacement, Gus Argenal, already has coached a team with just one returning star in Robby Robinson to an 8-2 record to start the 2023-24 season, 3-1 in the CCAA. The Yotes host Cal Poly Pomona at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 31.
