HAYWARD, Calif. – Seventh-ranked Cal State San Bernardino extended its CCAA conference win streak to 10 straight and reached the 20-win mark for the 26
th consecutive season Friday night by beating host Cal State East Bay, 3-0 in the Pioneers gym.
The victory improved the Yotes to 20-3 on the season and 13-2 in the CCAA to remain in first place with three regular season matches remaining. The Yotes play at Cal State Monterey Bay at 5 p.m. Saturday on this last road trip of the regular season.
Outside hitter Savannah Hoffman led a balanced Yotes offense with 13 kills on .367 hitting while her front line teammates
Ashley Robinson and
Trinity Sheridan produced 11 kills apiece as CSUSB prevailed 25-13, 25-20, 25-20.
Defensively,
Jayden Chornomud,
Marlee Nunley and
Shira Lahav combined for 28 digs. On the front line, middle blocker
Taryn King, the No.2-ranking blocker in the CCAA had a solo block and three block assists while her partner in the middle
Jenna Patton added one block assist and Sheridan added two block assists.
The Yotes, who lead the conference in hitting percentage at .285, had another night of big hits with fewer errors, hitting at a .396 clip against the Pioneers who managed just .179 hitting. King nailed seven kills on .700 hitting while Patton, the NCAA Division II leader in hitting percentage (.494) hit .600, making seven of 10 swings count as kills with one attack error.
Nunley collected 38 assists, giving her 748 for the season (8.55 per set).
Overall, the Yotes put down 53 kills to East Bay's 31 and recorded 58 digs to 35 for the host team.
CSUSB won both meetings with East Bay and now lead the all-time series against the Pioneers 27-3.
Mia Jordan and Kara Green led the Pioneers with seven kills apiece. Pi'ilani Carvalho and Megan Crecelius combined for 27 assists. Fane Paua had the team's only block and it was a solo effort.
The NCAA revealed its first regional poll of 2023 and Cal Poly Pomona was No. 1 in the West with a 17-5 record despite the fact they lost to CSUSB 3-2 on Oct. 7. Cal State L.A. is No. 2 despite their 13-9 record because they beat the Yotes Sept. 29 before losing to the Yotes on Oct. 28. The Yotes are No. 3. San Francisco State is No. 7 and Sonoma State is ranked No. 10 in the West.
In other CCAA action Friday night, Cal State L.A. defeated Cal State San Marcos 3-1, but three of the sets went to extra points with L.A. winning two by two points each. Cal Poly Pomona swept Cal State Dominguez Hills, 3-0.
