CHICO, Calif. – The No. 3 Yotes traveled to central California for their much-awaited rematch against the No. 10 Chico State Wildcats. CSUSB shot at an unusually low field goal and three-point percentage which gave the Chico State room to build a substantial lead. The Yotes chased down the Wildcats in the second half, but Chico State sealed the victory, 67-63.
In the first half, the Yotes went seven of 32 for a 21.9 field goal percentage. Chico State shot slightly better hitting 11 of 28 for a 39.3 field goal percentage. CSUSB also did not shoot well beyond the arch, hitting one of 14 for a 7.1 percentage. It was a clash for boards as the Yotes collected 21 rebounds on the half and the Wildcats collected 22 rebounds. Chico State held the lead going into the locker rooms, 34-20.
The second half, CSUSB scored 43 points, more than double the points they put on the board in the first half. The Yotes also hit four three-point shots for a 28.6 shooting percentage. Their field goal percentage increased as well as they went 13 for 32 from the field. The area that Chico State out did the CSUSB was bench points. The Wildcats collected 15 points from the bench and the Yotes scored five bench points. Chico State held the lead the entire game and took the win narrowly, 67-63.
"We didn't have our best stuff tonight and when you play good teams they will make you pay for that, which is exactly what Chico did" said coach
Andy Newman. "We didn't handle adversity very well and it showed. We need to get back to playing together and trusting our teammates on both ends of the floor. Credit Chico, they played great and deserved to win."
Leading in scoring for CSUSB was two-time CCAA Player of the Week,
Darius Mickens. Mickens collected 22 points, eight rebounds, and two assists on the game.
Eddie Davis led the Yotes in rebounds grabbing eight, and had 11 points and two assists.
Darius Lubom put up 15 points for CSUSB and he had four rebounds and one assist.
CSUSB is scheduled to play their next game on Thursday, February 10
