Yotes Win Home Opener Against Golden Eagles, 77-57

CSUSB hosted their home opener against La Sierra University

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - Going into the match, the Yotes held an overall record of 2-0 against the LA Sierra University Golden Eagles. The win streak would continue as the Yotes downed the Eagles, 77-57.
 
In the first quarter the Yotes hit 100 percent on free throws, hitting four for four. CSUSB hit six for eight field goals for 33.3 percent at field goal range. The Yotes controlled the majority of the first quarter, taking the lead into the second 17-13.
 
The second quarter the Yotes showed excellent teamwork. They tallied eight assists and had four fast break points. CSUSB was on target, as they improved their field goal percentage to 53 percent connecting on eight of 15 shots. Going into halftime the Yotes led, 30-36.
 
The lead would only grow for CSUSB in the third quarter. Defense would be the key to their success as they would force seven turnovers and keep the Golden Eagles to only seven points in the quarter. The Yotes playmaking ability was in full force as they continued work as team. It would take two to three passes when they found their open player for a layup or three-point shot. To close the quarter, Tori Guzman hit back-to-back three pointers taking the Yotes lead to end the quarter to, 61-37.
 
The Yotes would not slow their pace in the fourth quarter and continued to run the floor. CSUSB put full court pressure on the Eagles and forced turnover after turnover. CSUSB would take the win 77-57. 
 
Leading in points for the Yotes was Tatianna Russell who collected 13 points off of five field goals and two three-point shots. Russell closed the game shooting 40 percent from three-point range. Mia Dufresne closed the game with 10 points and six rebounds. Kaelyn Blackwell also finished the game with 10 points and was 80 percent in field goals.
 
Destiny Jackson found her teammates for five assists and collected eight points. Nina Wallace was also a key play maker for the Yotes as she collected five assists and had four points.

When asked how it feel back to be in Coussoulis Arena, coach Casandra Renno replied, "It's great to be back at home in front of our fans in Coussoulis Arena and to top it off with a win is an amazing feeling." 
 
The Yotes next competition is on Saturday, November 20th, as they face Biola at 5:30 pm in La Mirada.
