CHICO – The CSUSB Coyotes split the series opening doubleheader at Chico State on Friday, 2-5 and 3-0.
In game one, the Yotes tied the game at one in the third on a groundout.
Kyle Csakan singled in the ninth to drive in the second run. The Yotes collected 10 hits as a team as
Deshawn Johnson,
Andrew Talkington, and Csakan all had two hits.
Paul Sanchez doubled for CSUSB.
Andres Quinones pitched a hitless inning and two-thirds.
In game two,
Tyler Penix was excellent once again, going six innings allowing no runs on seven hits with five strikeouts.
Jackson Gilmore earned the save with a hitless final inning. The Yotes struck early with three runs in the first two innings.
Daryl Ruiz singled to left center in the first to plate two and
Marty Dosen's sac fly made it 3-0 in the second. Talkington and Johnson once again had two hits each and
Giovanni Del Negro had three including a double.
"Penix was outstanding again. He can throw three pitches for strikes right now which makes it really hard to hit," CSUSB head coach
Mike Nadeau said. "We got some early offense to help him out. Freshman Gio Del Negro was great with two doubles and a subtle to spark the offense. We need to build off this for tomorrow."
The Yotes (7-13) and Chico State (13-7) will play a single game tomorrow at 5 pm in Chico. Live links are on CSUSBathletics.com.
