ROHNERT PARK – The CSUSB Coyotes erased an 11-point halftime deficit and defeated Sonoma State on the road on Saturday afternoon, 67-64.
Jeremy Smith led the Yotes with 18 points,
Daytone Jennings added 13, and
Jordan Mitchell and
Richard Laku each scored 10. Laku led the team with nine rebounds as the Yotes shot 39.2 percent from the field after holding the Seawolves to 24 percent shooting in the second half.
The Yotes (11-3, 6-2 CCAA) fell behind midway into the first half and got the lead down to eight before trailing 34-45 at half. The Coyotes still trailed by 15 seven minutes into the second half, but a 16-0 run over a five-minute period saw the Yotes go ahead 56-55, capped by a jumper from
Tyrell Henderson.
The Seawolves (3-12, 2-7 CCAA) jumped back ahead, but a three from Smith at 5:22 saw the Yotes go ahead again. A three from Smith with 50 seconds left put CSUSB ahead for good, 66-64, as they held SSU scoreless over their next two possessions.
"I am really proud of how our team bounced back in the second half and found a way to win," head coach
Andy Newman said. "We lost our way there a little bit and it was good to see them reset, and get back to defending how we know how to. Really proud of this team effort."
The Coyotes, winners of five-straight, will return home on Thursday to face CSU Dominguez Hills at 7:30 pm. Live links are on CSUSBathletics.com.
