LOS ANGELES – The Yotes got the CCAA season started in style on Saturday afternoon, taking both games at Cal State LA, 3-1 and 14-2.
In game one the Yotes posted two runs in the fourth and one run in the seventh behind seven one-run innings from Tyler Williams (1-1) who notched nine K's. Andres Quinones and Oscar Rauda kept the Golden Eagles off the board and Rauda earned the save.
Garrett Ouellette singled to score two in the fourth and AJ Barraza added one more with a single in the seventh. The Yotes had 10 hits, all singles, left 10 on base, but their fantastic pitching carried the win.
Blake Timm (3-0) went the distance in game two, getting the complete win, scattering seven hits with five strikeouts. The Coyotes scored four in the first and added 10 more over the last six innings, highlighted by a grand slam from Richard Castro in the seventh. Castro added two doubles, as the Yotes had four doubles on the day and 15 hits total.
"When your starting pitching gives you quality starts and you play defense behind them, you will win a lot of games," head coach Mike Nadeau said. "Richard Castro was the spark for our offense and our freshman are stepping up big for us. It's a great start but we need to stay focused on the games tomorrow and keep momentum."
The Yotes (5-2, 2-0 CCAA) will host CSULA in a doubleheader tomorrow at Fiscalini Field at 10:30 am. Live stats are available on CSUSBathletics.com.
