DENVER – The No. 1 CSUSB Coyotes opened their final journey towards a National Championship on Thursday in absolute dominant fashion. In a match that lasted just over an hour, the Yotes dismantled the eighth-seed Molloy 3-0 from the campus of Metro State in Denver in the NCAA Quarterfinals.
The Yotes took set one, 25-16, set two 25-9 thanks to a 9-0 run with
Alexis Cardoza on the serve, and set three 25-18. Cardoza, one night after being named the National Player of the Year, was unstoppable with 17 kills hitting .630.
Jalyn Hayes added eight kills,
Stephanie Doak had seven, and
Moira Murphy had six. Four Yotes hit above .400 and the team hit .467 with just six errors on the night.
"One of the hallmarks of this team is our depth at the attacking positions," head coach
Kim Cherniss said. "We take pride in being high percentage attackers and we focus on slowly gaining control of each rally."
They dominated in blocks, 9-2, and kills, 48-31. Hayes had seven blocks and Murphy had four. The Coyotes were pushed a little in the third set but more or less controlled the entire match once the first serve went up.
"At this point it is all about playing for the right to move on," Cherniss said.
They will move on to face No. 4 Regis at 6:30 pm tomorrow night in the second half of the National Semifinals. Live links will be updated on CSUSBathletics.com.
