SAN BERNARDINO – In collaboration with countless campus partners and external constituents, the CSUSB Athletics Department has completed work on a transformative renovation of Coussoulis Arena in an ambitious three-month construction timeline.
Over the course of the summer, a brand-new innovatively designed floor was installed, replacing the original 1995 hardwood. The red chairback bleachers were replaced with in-brand blue chairbacks, and operational motors for two bleacher banks were replaced as well. The finishing touch was a center-hung four-sided video board accompanied by an LED ring and LED score table, with static scoreboards on the endlines.
"The renovations to Coussoulis Arena enhance what is already an amazing structure that complements CSUSB's dedication to our students and student-athletes, as well as the communities we serve," said university President Tomás Morales. "It's a tribute to the dedication of the many campus departments that worked together to take on and complete this massive project to transform one of CSUSB's crown jewels into a state-of-the-art arena."
The project was spearheaded by Jenny Sorenson, CSUSB Associate Vice President for Facilities Planning and Management along with CSUSB Director of Athletics Shawn Farrell and CSUSB Sr. Project Manager, Al Salgado. Club Resource Group (CRG) in conjunction with Competition Hardwood Flooring provided the new playing surface with Three Peaks, Inc. providing support on floor infrastructure upgrades. The final floor graphics design was developed in partnership with CSUSB Strategic Communications and CSUSB Associate Vice President for Strategic Communication Robert Tenczar, featuring the signature foothills of the CSUSB Campus with blue gradient coloring and the newly-released Yotes logo branding at center court.
"Facilities Planning and Management is proud to have been involved in the recent renovation project of Coussoulis Arena," Facilities Planning and Management Associate Vice President Jenny Sorenson said. "This project improved the student-athlete experience and provides added functionality and safety to our students and guests at Coussoulis Arena. This renovation could not have been possible without the collaboration of Facilities Planning, Design, and Construction, Facilities Management, Information Technology Services, Special Events and Guest Services, and Athletics. We hope that the updated facility will serve our campus for many years to come."
The center-hung video board, ring, and LED tables were manufactured by Nevco with Hopper Engineering providing the structural design support, Anderson Howard (AH) providing electrical, telecom, and seismic upgrades, along with the CSUSB Technology Support Center and Director Jim O'Linger, responsible for the electrical, and telecom infrastructure redesign and upgrades.
"This project was a fantastic way to honor the Coussoulis family and everything they have contributed to this university," Director of Athletics Shawn Farrell said. "It is a testament to the thriving partnerships on this campus and the student-centered approach we all value. It is truly a fantastic time to be a Yote!"
The video project required a full renovation of the existing infrastructure, which was supported by CSUSB Enterprise and Cloud Services, Technology Support Center, and P2S Engineer Consultants. The removal and installation of the bleachers was done by Herk Edwards, Inc. (HEI) and Hussey, which manufactured the new blue chairbacks.
The renovation is the most ambitious in the 24-year history of Coussoulis Arena, as it was accomplished in just under a tight three-month construction schedule, and the facility has reemerged as a showcase piece for the CSUSB and San Bernardino communities. CSUSB Athletics would like to thank ALL supporters and partners of this project, as testament to the student-centered culture at CSUSB.
