SAN BERNARDINO (March 30, 2018) — Jake Peloquin supplied the power and
Konner Arnold the arm as CSUSB secured a split in Friday's doubleheader against Stanislaus State, losing the opener 16-1 before winning the nightcap 4-3 in seven innings.
The records
CSUSB improved to 10-19 overall and 10-13 in the CCAA and Stanislaus State 17-14, 13-12.
The opener
Little went right for CSUSB in the opener as the Warriors' Vinny Margiotta hit for the cycle. He went 5-for-5 and drove in six runs. His grand slam capped his day in the eighth inning.
And the nightcap
The W arriors built a 3-0 lead off Coyotes' ace Arnold, but got back into contention late.
Alec Ceniceros hit a smash to first base, driving in two runs (
Ty Lineberger, single) and
Tyler Robles (single).
Kyle Csakan came through on a sacrifice bunt that brought in
Gabe Chavez (single).
The homer
Peloquin led off the sixth against reliever Ken Hahn, and promptly greeted him with a deep shot over the left-field wall. It was Peloquin's first HR of the season.
And Mr. Arnold
In the seventh, Stanislaus' Jarrett Viega led off with a double to right center. Nathan Thompson entered as a pinch runner, and that brought up Ethan Utler. The senior laid down a bunt attempt that popped up and Arnold dove toward the third-base line for the out. He got up, saw Thompson strayed midway to third, and threw a bullet to double-up the Warrior.
And Peloquin on the defensive end
The catcher saved the game for the Coyotes when Brandon DeLaGuardia popped up behind the plate Peloquin raced toward the wall and made the catch while falling down.
More on Arnold
The senior right-hander faced just 15 batters over the final five innings, and retired the Warriors in order in the final four.
