CHICO (March 23, 2018) — A nearly 5-hour game with gutty relief efforts nearly paid off for the Coyotes, who were defeated 9-8 in 14 innings to Chico State in CCAA play Friday night.
The two teams will play today in a doubleheader that begins at 11 a.m.
Trailing 8-4, CSUSB tied the game with a four-run, four-hit sixth.
Shawn Porthan led off with a double to left, and scored on
Garrett Ouellette's single. Three batters later,
Gabe Chavez's double to center scored Ouellette and CSUSB trailed 8-6.
Back-to-back walks created an RBI for
Mando Rodriguez and
Erick Allegro later drove in Chavez and the game was tied at 8-8.
It remained that score for the next seven innings. Reliever Garrett Christiansen did not give up a hit in the sixth and seventh.
Kyle Tolle threw 1.1 innings and gave up a hit with three walks.
Noah Simon battled with 3.2 innings of shutout relief. He gave up two hits, walked three and struck out three.
Rodriguez, Allegro and
Alec Ceniceros all were 2 for 5, and Porthan, Ouelllette and
Jason Nall each had two hits.
The Coyotes fell to 7-16 and 7-10 CCAA, while Chico State improved to 15-10, 11-8.
