Coyotes work it out in 2-1 victory

SAN BERNARDINO (Sept. 4, 2017) — Go-to offensive threat Rachael Figg and Alexia Gonzalez gave the Coyotes an early lead in their 2-1 victory over visiting Central Washington 2-1 in nonconference soccer Monday morning at Coyote Premier Field.

CSUSB, now 2-0-1 overall, continues its nonconference schedule, playing at Regis (Friday) and at Colorado School of Mines (Sunday).

Difference makers
Figg put the Coyotes on the board in the 9th minute, connecting on an unassisted play. She came up on the left side of Wildcats' keeper Emily Holt, and drove a shot past Holt's right side for the 1-0 tally. Figg now has three of the Coyotes' four goals this season.

Eighteen minutes later, Gonzalez gave the Coyotes a 2-0 lead, thanks to a feed from Nora Perez. Again, the shot was Holt's right side. It was Gonzalez' first goal of her Coyote career.

In the net
Junior GK Destiny Collins had five saves — four in the first half and improved to 2-0-1 in 290 minutes of play.

Going 90
Five Coyotes — Figg, Nicki Argentieri, Bianca Scodellaro, Collins and Arielle Stoyanow — played the entire game. All told, 16 Coyotes saw action against the Wildcats, now 0-2.

In this corner
CWU had four corner kicks, but did not convert. CSUSB had one for the game.

All-time series
It marked just the second time the schools have met on the pitch, with CSUSB now leading 2-0-1.

Coach Says
"A great start to our season,'' Coyotes coach LeBaron Hollimon said. "Taking two and a draw is super exciting. For us, we're pleased with our collective defending. We figured out to how break their pressure a little bit, but it took us a little while in the first half, and settled into the game. We have work to do, but we have a solid platform to build upon.''
