LOS ANGELES (Feb. 9, 2017) — The Coyotes nearly cut a 12-point deficit in the final four-plus minutes of play, falling short 71-70 against Cal State L.A. in CCAA basketball Thursday night.
Trailing 68-56 with 4:43 remaining in the game, CSUSB earned three straight layups from
Khleem Perkins,
Eli Brown and
Ramon Eaton and cut the deficit 68-62 with 2:44 to go.
Then after CSULA extended the lead back to eight, a 3-pointer from
Everett Turner and a three-point play from Eaton got the Coyotes to within a basket — 70-68 with 37 seconds to go.
CSULA's Travis Hammond hit the front end of a two-shot foul to push the Golden Eagles 71-68 with 11 seconds, giving the Coyotes one last shot.
A Turner 3-pointer was off with 4 seconds to go, and Eaton scored on a putback for the final margin.
Perkins led the Coyotes (11-9, 7-8 CCAA) with 16 points, and
Dorian Butler and Eaton each had 14. Turner had 12.
CSULA improved to 13-12, 8-8 and was led by Hammonds' 16 points.
