SAN BERNARDINO (Feb. 4, 2017) – An eight-point third quarter may have seemed like the Coyotes were in trouble in Saturday's game against visiting Cal State Monterey Bay.
Not when
Mya Johnson is wearing the Blue and Black of CSUSB. Her basket early in the fourth quarter gave the Coyotes the lead for good in their 52-49 win over the Otters at Coussoulis Arena. The victory was CSUSB's third straight, putting the Coyotes at 12-6 overall and 9-5 in the CCAA.
The offense may have been not quite head coach
Susan Crebbin's pleasure, but the defensive work was more than pleasing. It marked the second straight game CSUSB kept the opposition from scoring 50 points and third time this season.
Johnson led the way with 13 points and 12 rebounds, her 10
th double-double of the season. Teammate
Sabrea Coleman was the only other Coyotes in double digits with 10 points (seven on free throws).
The Coyotes got going in the final quarter and eventually led by five, thanks to
Leelee Owens' 3-pointer that put CSUSB ahead 45-40 with 4:06 left.
The Otters got to within 46-45 with 2:29 remaining, but another jumper from Owens gave the Coyotes a 48-45 lead with 1:58 left and they held on for the win.
Aubri Smith led CSUMB (5-17, 2-13) with 13 points.
The Coyotes are at Cal State L.A. on Thursday and at Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday.
