SAN BERNARDINO (Feb. 23, 2017) — Two months ago, the game between the Coyotes and UC San Diego was a one-sided game that belonged completely to the Tritons.
On Thursday, CSUSB played much more inspired only to fall short, 66-60 in CCAA basketball at Coussoulis Arena.
The Coyotes (14-9 overall, 11-8 CCAA), who went into the week with a CCAA Tournament berth clinched, complete the regular season Saturday night against Cal State Dominguez Hills.
Senior
Mya Johnson scored a game-high 18 points for the Coyotes and
Sabrea Coleman was right behind with 17.
Summer Ramsey,
Casie Johnson and
Courtney Coleman all had eight points.
Ramsey was again solid on both ends of the court with five steals and six rebounds.
The Coyotes played much stronger than their taller foe inside, outscoring the Tritons 30-20 in the paint. Both teams had 22 field goals and the Tritons outscored the Coyotes at the line, 14-13.
The difference was at 3-point stripe, with UCSD hitting eight to CSUSB's three.
A pair of 3-pointers from Beth Mounier at the end of the half helped the Tritons take a 34-31 lead at the break.
The Coyotes fell behind by eight early in the third quarter, and that's when they started their climb back into the game.
Mya Johnson hit two baskets and a free throw from
Sabrea Coleman cut the deficit to 46-45 with 2:29 remaining in the third.
CSUSB then capped its 7-0 run on a beautiful feed from
Leelee Owens to
Mya Johnson. Owens brought out the UCSD defense away from the paint, and her bounce pass inside to a wide-open Johnson gave CSUSB a 47-46 edge with 1:57 left.
But UCSD answered right back with a 6-0 run of its own that closed the quarter and a 52-47 UCSD lead.
The Coyotes got as close as three on two occasions — their last when
Mya Johnson hit a pair of free throws with 2:33 left and the Coyotes down 62-59.
Neither team scored over the next two-plus minutes until Mounier hit two free throws and the Tritons stayed out front for the win.
Mounier led UCSD (21-5, 17-3) with 16 including four 3s. Joleen Yang had 15 with three 3s.
The Coyotes will honor their five seniors — Mya and
Casie Johnson,
Michelle Okoroike, Ramsey and
Megan Vina — in a pregame ceremony Saturday.
