SAN BERNARDINO (Nov. 20, 2017) — CSUSB will face Azusa Pacific in the NCAA Division II West Regional opening round Thursday, Nov. 30, at California Baptist University.
The Coyotes, who finished 21-7 overall, won their 13th CCAA title in school history Saturday when it defeated Chico State 3-1 at San Francisco State. The Coyotes take a 10-match winning streak into NCAA play and will face a Cougars program making its first ever appearance in the NCAA. APU is 22-6.
"We have seen them online and watched them the preseason scrimmage,'' said head coach
Kim Cherniss. "They are big and they have some kids with pretty good arms. I think they are good, and we have some answers where we can be effective against them.''
CSUSB will play in its 18th consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance — all under Cherniss.
CBU is the host and takes the No. 1 ranking in the country into the tournament. CBU is 28-0 and faces 8th seed Sonoma State (20-8) of the CCAA in the opening round.
Other participants include No. 2 Western Washington (25-3), which will face No. 7 Alaska Anchorage (19-10), and No. 3 Northwest Nazarene (24-4), which will face No. 6 Central Washington (19-9).
The Elite Eight will be played at the University of West Florida in Pensacola, Fla., on Dec-7-9.
