Late flurry not enough

SAN BERNARDINO (Oct. 6, 2017) — An intense day of high winds and hot temperatures created a tough afternoon for the Coyotes in their game against No. 17 Sonoma State in CCAA soccer.

What happened
SSU got two goals from Alexis Espitia before the Coyotes made a furious comeback in the 2-1 loss.

And for the Coyotes
Junior Haidee Duran came off the bench and created a flurry of activity late in the game. After an SSU foul, senior Bianca Scodellaro kicked in a high ball that Duran corralled in the box. The Norco native blistered the shot and the Coyotes trailed 2-1 in the 82nd minute.

Three and out
With one minute remaining in the game, CSUSB had three shots from inside and tight only to be denied. Duran and Sarah Bradley each had a shot blocked, and Duran followed with another shot that was saved by Seawolves GK Kristen Spear.

A near miss
The Coyotes had their first PK attempt of the season when Cassandra Bermudez had her opportunity in the first half, but was denied by Spear.

What's next
CSUSB is now 5-6-1 overall and 3-4 in the CCAA. SSU is 11-1, 5-1.

Senior Day
CSUSB closes its home regular season portion of the schedule Sunday against Humboldt State. The Coyotes will honor their nine seniors — Nicki Argentieri, Bradley, Rachael Figg, Heather Melgar, Anna Pinedo, Moani Rivers, Saida Sandoval, Scodellaro, and Arielle Stoyanow.

Coach Says
"A disappointing loss,'' head coach LeBaron Hollimon said. "We had enough opportunities to have won the game. We could have been up 2-1 going into halftime. We lost our runner and gve up a bad goal in the second half, and just like that we're down 2-0. It's disappointing knowing how well we can perform and only proving it in the last 15 minutes. The way we finished the game is a really big positive and hopefully we can carry the way we ended today's game into Sunday.''
