SAN BERNARDINO (Jan. 21, 2017) — The Coyotes lived beyond the 3-point arc Saturday night and made visiting Cal State San Marcos pay in a wild 106-100 victory before a crowd of 787 at Coussoulis Arena.
CSUSB scored its most 3-pointers in a game in 21 seasons with 19 bombs and needed every one of them to hold off the Cougars. The Coyotes, who led by 22 points late in the first half, saw CSUSM come back with a furious second-half comeback. The Cougars scored 59 points in the final half — the most by an opponent in a half in coach
Jeff Oliver's 15 years.
Senior
Everett Turner led the Coyotes (8-7, 4-6 CCAA) with 23 points and five 3s. Six Coyotes in all reached double figures — Doran Butler (17),
Ramon Eaton (16),
Blake McBride (15),
Nolan Kelly (15) and
Eli Brown (11). A total of eight Coyotes scored at least one three with Kelly joining Turner with five.
The Coyotes grabbed control in the first half with one of the finest scoring outputs under Oliver. CSUSB outscored the Cougars 30-7 in an eight-minute plus span and led 58-36 on Brown's jumper with 48 seconds left.
The Coyotes' 58 first-half points were the most in a half in 11 seasons with a 64.7 field goal percentage (22 of 34 with 10 3s).
But CSUSM rallied back in the final 20 minutes, hitting 71 percent from the field. The Cougars tied the game twice, the latest at 98-98 on Ethan Alvano's 3 with 1:45 left.
Eaton answered with a layup, and Turner followed with a layup and CSUSB led 102-98 with 44 seconds left. McBride then hit three free throws that extended the Coyotes' lead to 105-98 with nine seconds and they held on for the win.
CSUSB reached the 100-point mark for the first time this season and the first since its 102-99 3OT victory over UC San Diego in the 2013 CCAA opening round.
Alvano led the Cougars (13-6, 8-4) with a game-high 29 points. Josh Spiers added 21. Their 100 points was the first time a CSUSB opponent reached the century mark since Seattle Pacific on Nov. 22, 2008.
The Coyotes are at Chico State on Friday night.
