SAN BERNARDINO (Jan. 21, 2017) — A spirited comeback fell short in CSUSB's 65-61 loss to Cal State San Marcos in CCAA basketball Saturday night at Coussoulis Arena.
Senior
Mya Johnson reached her eighth double-double this season with 16 points and 20 rebounds — the most by a Coyote in six seasons — and
Summer Ramsey played the most complete game of the season with 13 points, six rebounds, eight steals and six assists.
Sabrea Coleman also reached double figures with 13 points and seven rebounds for CSUSB (9-5, 6-4 CCAA), which had its four-game winning streak snapped.
CSUSB trailed 56-43 through three quarters before it got on track in a hurry. A layup from Ramsey a three-point play from Johnson and a tip-in by Ramsey cut the deficit to 56-50 with 7:44 left.
Coleman then scored consecutive layups, and
Courtney Coleman added two free throws and CSUSB tied the game 56-56 on a 13-0 run with 5:05 left.
The Cougars pushed back and led by four, before the Coyotes again cut into the lead.
Ramsey tied the game at 61-61 with 22 seconds left on two free throws and gave her nine points on the quarter, but CSUSM regained the lead for good on two free throws from Raegan Lillie with 11 seconds remaining.
The Coyotes had a chance to tie, but Johnson's shot was blocked by Lupe Cruz with four seconds left, and the game was CSUSM's.
CSUSB shot just 28.4 percent for the game, despite 20 more field goal attempts than the Cougars (9-8, 6-6). The Coyotes scored 21 points off 22 Cougars' turnovers.
Lillie and Monica Friedl each scored 13 for CSUSM.
The Coyotes return to the road this week when it plays Chico State (Friday) and Stanislaus State (Saturday).
Johnson's effort on the boards was just the seventh time in school history a Coyote reached at least 20 in a game.
