SAN BERNARDINO (Jan. 18, 2017) — Khleem Perkins came through with a buzzer-beating layup and helped CSUSB upset No. 20-ranked San Francisco State 69-68 in CCAA play Wednesday night at Coussoulis Arena.
The Coyotes (7-7, 3-6 CCAA) snapped their three-game losing streak and bounced back from their 12-point loss Saturday night to the same Gators (14-3, 7-3).
Perkins led the Coyotes with 15 points and senior
Everett Turner fell short of just the second triple-double in school history with 12 points, nine assists and nine rebounds.
Phil Reed also reached double digits with 10 points and nine rebounds.
CSUSB built a 13-point lead with 3:53 remaining in the game and seemingly had the game in hand. Only the Gators didn't give up. They answered with an impressive 17-3 run down the stretch and went ahead 66-65 on Israel Hakim's jumper with 19 seconds left.
CSUSB regained the lead on a nifty inside move by Perkins. He drove the lane for a layup and the Coyotes led by one with 8.6 seconds left.
SFSU worked up court, and Israel was fouled by
Eli Brown with 4.5 seconds remaining. He hit both shots, sandwiched around a CSUSB timeout, and the Coyotes had one last chance, down 68-67.
Ramon Eaton inbounded the ball to
Nolan Kelly, who got to midcourt and found Turner. The Ontario native then saw Perkins open, who drove toward the basket, and put his shot up with .3 seconds left and the Coyotes had their victory.
This was an important team win for coach
Jeff Oliver's team. Not only was it the first win over a ranked team in three seasons, it gives the squad needed confidence in its drive toward postseason play.
CSUSB had 21 assists on 26 field goals with five Coyotes having multiple assists. They forced the Gators into 17 turnovers and scored 17 points off miscues.
Dorian Butler and Kelly each had nine points and Eaton had eight.
Warren Jackson led SFSU with 22 points before fouling out with 1:08 left.
The Coyotes entertain Cal State San Marcos on Saturday night.
