SANTA ROSA (Jan. 13, 2017) — Mya Johnson was an unstoppable force Friday night, scoring 26 points and grabbing 13 rebounds as CSUSB led from the outset in a 65-52 victory over host Sonoma State in CCAA women's basketball.
Johnson hit 11 of 20 from the floor and seven of her rebounds came on the offensive side as the Coyotes improved to 7-4 overall and 4-3 in the CCAA.
Sabrea Coleman was the only other Coyote in double figures with 12 points.
CSUSB gained control of the game in the third quarter, outscoring the Seawolves 24-13 — thanks to 13 from Johnson — after leading by only 26-23 at halftime.
Sonoma State closed CSUSB's lead to two points at 34-32 with 5:58 remaining in the quarter before the Coyotes shut down their foe on a 14-2 run.
Johnson was 5 of 7 from the field and hit three of four from the line in the third. SSU never got closer than eight points twice in the final quarter.
CSUSB shot 45.8 percent on 27 of 59 shooting. More importantly, the defense came through for coach
Susan Crebbin's team. It held the Seawolves (8-6, 4-4) to just 27.9 percent from the field.
The Coyotes complete the weekend Saturday night at San Francisco State.
The game was played in Santa Rosa due to renovations conducted at SSU.
