SAN BERNARDINO (Sept. 2, 2016) — Three-time defending NCAA champion Grand Valley State dominated the first 45 minutes of play against the host Coyotes on Friday afternoon and secured a 2-0 victory in the women's soccer season opener for both teams.
The Lakers fired off 11 shots with eight shots on goal in the opening half and made two SOGs pay off. A goal in the seventh minute by Dani Johnson and another from Jayma Martin in the 18
th minute secured the victory.
CSUSB played more than 80 percent of the opening half on defense, as GVSU used impressive ball control on its end. The Coyotes had a one-on-one scoring opportunity, thanks to
Rachael Figg's loose ball pick-up, but her shot was spot-on into the hands of Lakers' GK Jennifer Steinaway in the sixth minute.
Then with 45 seconds left in the half, CSUSB earned a penalty kick opportunity with Figg taking the shot. She found the left-side net for an apparent goal, but it was nullified when the head referee deemed teams were not set. Her second effort was gripped by Steinaway and the Lakers went into the break with a 2-0 lead.
CSUSB held GVSU to seven second-half shots and Coyotes' keeper
Megan Vina wrapped up all four SOG in a much-better played half.
Figg led with two SOG and
Amanda Lopez had the other for CSUSB.
The Coyotes are off until Tuesday when they play at Concordia.
