Coyotes season comes to a close

STOCKTON (May 12, 2016) — The 2016 season came to an end Thursday afternoon for the fifth-seeded Coyotes in their CCAA Tournament game against Cal Poly Pomona.

Senior Andrew Lopez keyed the Coyotes' four-hit attack with a solo home run in the fifth as CSUSB closed the season with a 6-2 loss to the top-seeded Broncos at Banner Island Ballpark.

The Coyotes (22-29) grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the first, thanks to a leadoff single by senior William Ouellette. Fellow senior Grant Buchanan moved over Ouellette on a sacrifice bunt, and one batter later, Brian Lockey came through with a run-scoring single to right with two outs.

Top-seeded CPP (35-16) scored twice in the second and three times in the third off Coyotes starter Don Sullivan. CPP's Caleb Romo led off the second inning with a home run to left center and the Broncos utilized three straight singles in the third for their three-run inning.

Broncos starter Max Bethell (9-3) was strong in his effort, striking out 11 Coyotes and retiring CSUSB in order five times in a complete game.

Sullivan (5-6) went seven innings, giving up eight hits and five runs – all earned. He had five strikeouts with two walks. Ouellette came on to pitch the final two innings and allowed two hits and one run.

Ryan Rich had the other hit for the Coyotes, a two-out bunt in the fourth.

CPP defeated CSUSB in all six meetings this season. In fact, the Coyotes hit a collective .176 against the Broncos and struck out 51 times in 53 innings.
