SAN BERNARDINO (April 28, 2016) -- Junior LHP
Don Sullivan did everything he could to keep his team in the game against No. 24 Cal Poly Pomona on Friday.
Unfortunately, it wasn't enough as the visiting Broncos scored the game's runs on sacrifice fly balls in their 2-0 win over the Coyotes in the CCAA series opener at Fiscalini Field.
Sullivan threw eight innings with six strikeouts and no walks. He hit two batters and gave up just four hits -- all singles -- in 102 pitches.
CSUSB stranded 12 runners on base and finished 1-for-14 with runners in scoring position. The Coyotes had the bases loaded with one out in the third, but a ground-out at the plate and a flyout to center ended the threat.
William Ouellette led off the sixth with a double to right, and advanced on a sac bunt by
Ryan Rich. But the threat ended on a strikeout by
Dylan Lohman and a flyout to left by
Brian Lockey.
In the 10th, CPP put runners on first and second without an out on a single by Chris Stratton, and a fielder's choice by Jared James, who bunted to advance Stratton, but reached base when Stratton beat out the throw at second.
CPP then loaded the bases on an error by reliever
Austin Casillas, and sacrifice flys by Jason Padlo and Michael Erb provided the difference.
Ouellette earned a two-out single in the 10th, but Rich ended the game when he flew out to right.
Grant Buchanan had a double and Ouellette finished 2-for-5.
Padlo had two hits for CPP (28-14, 20-10). Ryan Alsworth earned the win in 1 1/3 innings of relief.
CSUSB dropped to 20-22, 15-15.
