Box Score 2 SAN BERNARDINO (March 19, 2016) -- Pitching took center stage Saturday afternoon in the Coyotes' doubleheader against Stanislaus State and
Tyler Wells stood tall with a masterful effort.
The Yucaipa right-hander dominated the Warriors' bats in the opener, throwing a one-hit shutout in a 4-0 victory. Then, in the nightcap, Stanislaus' Jordan Kron nearly matched Wells with a two-hit shutout in his team's 5-0 win.
The two teams complete the weekend series Sunday morning at 11 a.m. at Fiscalini Field. CSUSB takes a 13-15 overall record and 8-8 CCAA slate against the Warriors (12-8, 5-5).
Game 1: Coyotes 4, Stanislaus State 0Wells (2-2) went the distance for the first time this season and needed 111 pitches for his shutout. After giving up a single to Charlie Gaff in the second inning, Wells retired the 20 batters he faced until giving up a one-out walk in the ninth.
Not one Warrior reached second base, and had seven strikeouts.
CSUSB took the lead early with a two-out single up the middle by
Grant Buchanan in the second that scored
Dylan Lohman.
The score remained 1-0 CSUSB until the seventh. The Coyotes batted around and scored three runs, thanks to back-to-back-to-back singles by Buchanan,
William Ouellette and
Jake Caron that led off the inning.
Buchanan and Caron each had two hits, and
Andrew Lopez and
Daniel Romo accounted for the other two runs batted in.
Wells lowered his ERA to 1.28 and the opposition is hitting .159.
Game 2: Stanislaus State 5, Coyotes 0Kron dominated the Coyotes' bats, throwing six innings of no-hit ball and finishing up with a two-hitter.
Leading 2-0, Stanislaus' Michael Chavarria unloaded a two-run home run over the left-field wall in the fourth and the Warriors added another run in the seventh.
Lopez ended Kron's attempt at a no-hitter when he led off the seventh with a double to the left-center gap.
Dylan Lohman had the other hit for CSUSB with a single to short in the eighth.
Kron finished with 10 strikeouts, two walks and hit two batters.
Don Sullivan (4-3) took the loss in 6 2/3 innings. He had five strikeouts adn walked just one with a hit batter. All five runs allowed were earned.
Gaff had three hits and Patrick Mulry and Nathan Chunn had two each.
