TURLOCK (March 1, 2016) -- It's been said that postseason play is another name for a second season. If that is so, tourney time could bode well as a second chance for the Coyotes.
Fifth-seed CSUSB was perfect in 13 free throw attempts in the final 1:17 of play in its 76-66 victory over No. 4 Stanislaus State in the opening round of the CCAA Tournament on Tuesday night.
The Coyotes (14-12) move on to the CCAA semifinals where they will face top-seed Cal State Dominguez Hills at 5:35 p.m. Friday night at the Stockton Arena.
The 1-2 punch of seniors
Brianna Harden and
Adriana Brodie came up huge against the Warriors. Each earned a double-double with Harden scoring a season-high 22 points (18 in the second half) with 10 rebounds, while Brodie scored 18 (10 of 10 free throws) with 10 boards.
Three others scored in double figures --
Chelsea Barnes 15,
Sophie Bhasin 11 and
Alexcia Mack 10.
CSUSB climbed back from a nine-point deficit in the first quarter and picked apart the Warriors (16-11) by outscoring its foe in each of the final three quarters.
Barnes kept the Coyotes close with 12 first-half points as they trailed 34-29 at the break. Fourteen turnovers explained the Coyotes' early woes.
Both Harden and Brodie played tough inside in the second half as CSUSB pulled even at the end of the third quarter, 47-47.
Barnes gave the Coyotes their first lead since the first quarter when she scored on a layup with 6:38 to go on a feed from Mack. Then Mack gave the Coyotes the lead for good on a 3-pointer that put her team up 58-56 with 4:52 remaining.
Barnes gave CSUSB a two-possession lead on a free throw that put it ahead 64-58 with 1:17 to go. And down the stretch, Brodie was 6-of-6 from the line, with Mack hitting on four attempts and Bhasin hitting two to extend the lead.
The Coyotes were 25 of 56 from the field on 44.6-percent shooting and outrebounded the Warriors, 41-27.Â
They outscored the Warriors from the line 22-11.
