SAN FRANCISCO (Jan. 9, 2016) -- Forcing a team into more turnovers than field goals scored almost always leads to victory. And on Saturday night, the Coyotes secured just that in their 53-47 victory over host San Francisco State.
CSUSB created 23 SFSU turnovers and the Gators scored just 14 field goals in the six-point victory. The game was CSUSB's third straigh in which they allowed their foe to score just 47 points.
The Coyotes, now 8-4 and 5-3 in the CCAA, earned their fourth straight victory. Senior
Sophie Bhasin led the Coyotes with 16 points and fellow senior
Chelsea Barnes added 15 with nine rebounds. Senior
Alexcia Mack was the only other Coyote in double figures with 13 points.
Just four Coyotes scored -- senior
Brianna Harden had nine points -- and senior
Chelsea Austin, despite not scoring, led the Coyotes in blocks (five), steals (four) and assists (two) along with five rebounds.
The Coyotes never trailed and led for more than 38 minutes. Still, the Gators didn't go away as they used the 3-point shot to their advantage. They outscored the Coyotes from the arc 15-0 and tied the game late.
A 6-0 surge by the Gators helped them tie the game at 43-43 with 3:46 left. Mack stopped the run on a layup, but SFSU got to within one point on two occasions in a 40-second stretch, the last at 1:47 left and CSUSB up 48-47.
Barnes put the Coyotes up three on a layup, and after a missed SFSU shot, Bhasin answered with a layup of her own and the Coyotes led 52-47 with 35 seconds left.
Mack added a free throw late for the final cushion.
The Coyotes built a 13-point lead early, scoring 10 points off turnovers in the first quarter.
CSUSB returns to the Bay Area next week with games at Cal State Monterey Bay and league-leading Cal State East Bay.
SFSU (4-9, 2-5) was led by Naila Washington, who had game-highs in points (16) and rebounds (13).
