ROHNERT PARK (Jan. 8, 2016) -- The right mix of defensive pressure and offensive strength pushed the Coyotes over Sonoma State 59-47 in CCAA women's basketball Saturday night.
For the second straight game the Coyotes were strong on the defensive side, allowing a season-best 47 points. And on the offensive end, coach Sue Crebbin's starters shot a combined 54.3 percent (25 for 46) in a game CSUSB took control for good in the second quarter.
Trailing 16-14 with 9:43 remaining in the first half, the Coyotes strung together a 15-2 run, thanks to eight points off SSU turnovers.
All five Coyotes starters -- seniors
Alexcia Mack,
Chelsea Austin,
Chelsea Barnes and
Brianna Harden -- scored points in the pivotal run.
Mack led CSUSB, winners of three straight, with 16 points with five 3-pointers. Barnes was next with 12 (six field goals with five rebounds), while Bhasin and Austin each had 11.
Harden had eight points wtih four rebounds
Austin led the Coyotes in rebounds with sixth and shared team-high honors in steals with Bhasin with three each.
CSUSB (7-4 overall, 4-3 CCAA) led 30-21 at the break and led by as many as 18, thanks to a jumper from Barnes that put CSUSB ahead 59-41 with 2:39 left.
The Seawolves scored the game's final six points that narrowed the gap. Hannah Sourek led SSU with just eight points.
The Coyotes complete their trip to the Bay Area with Saturday night's game at San Francisco State.
