SAN BERNARDINO (Jan. 2, 2016) – The Coyotes showed their offensive strength Saturday night and it paid off with a one-sided victory.
The Coyotes put on an offensive show in the second half against Humboldt State and went on to win 73-47 in CCAA women's basketball at Coussoulis Arena.
Six Coyotes, now 6-4 overall and 3-3 CCAA, scored in double figures, led by senior All-CCAA F
Chelsea Barnes with 14 points. Fellow seniors
Alexcia Mack,
Chelsea Austin and
Brianna Harden all scored 12 points apiece, while junior reserve
Summer Ramsey had 10 with a team season-high six steals and
Sophie Bhasin 10.
The 26-point win was CSUSB's largest margin of victory in the 21-game series that began in 2006.
Coach Sue Crebbin's team found another gear after the Coyotes trailed by five (35-30) with 6:06 left in the third quarter. Mack hit two 3-pointers and Ramsey added five in a pivotal 15-0 run that lifted the Coyotes up 45-35 after a pair of Ramsey free throws with 1:38 remaining in the quarter.
Then after HSU closed to within seven (51-44) with 5:26 left in the game, CSUSB finished off the Jacks with a powerful 22-3 run for the win.
Austin kick started the run with a three and she added two more in the run, while CSUSB hit nine straight free throws in the final two-plus minutes of play.
CSUSB forced 24 HSU turnovers and converted them into 22 points.
The Coyotes led for 34 minutes and there were only two lead changes. Still, the game was in the balance when HSU opened the third quarter on a 10-2 run, with four points from Jacks' leading scorer Amanda Kunst.
That put HSU ahead 35-30 and that set-up the Coyotes' first run that put them in the lead for good.
Harden earned her first double-double of the season with a team-high 10 rebounds. And once again, CSUSB was solid from the line, hitting 19 of 23 for an 82.6 percent clip.
Mack dealt seven assists and Barnes distributed four.
The Coyotes go on the road for the next two weeks when they face Sonoma State on Friday.
HSU (6-7, 3-3) was led by Kiana Brown's 14 points. Kunst, who entered play averaging 14.6 points, was held to just six and seven turnovers.
