HAYWARD (Jan. 16, 2016) -- Cal State San Bernardino grabbed control late in its game against Cal State East Bay and earned a 78-73 victory in CCAA men's basketball Saturday night.
Junior
Everett Turner led the Coyotes, now 5-9 overall and 2-8 CCAA, with 19 points as five Coyotes scored in double figures. Senior
Zeke DeBlase scored 14 points with four 3-pointers,
Desi Barmore and
Juan Martinez each had 12 and
Keith Smith 10.
CSUSB utilized fine shooting all game long and finished at 54.7 percent from the field on 29-of-53 shooting. Both teams reached 50 percent from the floor, but the Coyotes played well in transition with 28 points off 19 Pioneers turnovers.
Turner scored 13 first-half points as CSUSB climbed back after trailing 29-22 with 6:42 to go. He triggered the run with consecutive baskets and the Coyotes outscored the Pioneers 17-6 in five-plus minutes.
Then in the second half, CSUSB came back once again. CSUEB regained the lead and pushed out front 64-58 with 6:34 to go.
Four Coyotes scored in a 12-1 run and they grabbed their largest lead of the game to that point when Turner hit a 3-pointer that put CSUSB ahead 70-65 with 2:29 remaining.
The Pioneers closed to within a point twice, but Turner and
Darryl Adigwu combined to score four free throws in the final 19 seconds for the win.
Ryan Okwudibonye led the Pioneers (6-10, 2-7) with a game-high 26 points. The Pioneers shot a high percentage from the floor as well, hitting 53.3 percent. Nineteen turnovers, however, played a role in the loss.
CSUSB returns to Coussoulis Arena on Friday when it takes on Cal State L.A.
