SAN BERNARDINO [Sept. 25, 2015] --
Malika O'Brien and
Lauren Nicholson both pounded 13 kills while the 17th-ranked Coyote defense held visiting Cal State Dominguez Hills to .152 on the night en route to a 3-1 win over the Toros tonight at Coussoulis Arena.
CSUSB improves to 10-2, 3-1 CCAA, keeping pace atop the league standings with Cal Poly Pomona and UC San Diego.
The hosts took an early 8-5 lead after a Toro serving error, only to have the hosts take the lead at 13-11 after taking a time out.
The Coyotes, however, would take the lead for good at 20-19 on a
Lauren Nicholson putaway, prompting a CSUDH time out.
The hiatus was good for two points, but the Coyotes scored five of the final seven to take a 25-21 win.
San Bernardino limited the Toros to a -.026 hitting percentage in the second set en route to an easy 25-11 win, putting away 12 balls against just one error in the process.
The Toros, however, returned the favor in the third by hitting .344 compared to just .081 for CSUSB, extending the match to at least four sets.
CSUDH looked to push it to five after taking a 8-4 lead, and keeping its four-point cushion at 12-8 on a Coyote error, but the serves of
Heather Sawchuk and
Ashley Solis proved too tough for the Toros to overcome as the duo pushed CSUSB to a 15-13 lead, with O'Brien serving six-straight points late in the match to give the Coyotes control for good en route to the 25-21 decision.
Jayann DeHoog went for 49 sets in the win, with Solis (21),
Alexandra Torline (17) and Nicholson (11) pacing the Coyotes' ground game, and O'Brien leading the squad with 5 blocks.
Cal State L.A. makes its way to Coussoulis Arena tomorrow night for a 7 pm showdown in what could be a CCAA and NCAA postseason preview.
